13 Things To Do While Stuck at Home

Updated: Apr 6, 2020

Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus, our lives went almost completely digital with the exception of going to the grocery store or essential employees going to work. Most of us probably haven't seen our friends or family for weeks at this point. What is there to do while we wait for things to turn back to normal? I've compiled a short list of things that I've been doing and that you can too!

1. Plan a Trip or Day Out

While we can't do much now, we can plan for when we are able to. See what there is to do in your area for you and your friends. Plan a trip to a different state or country that you've been wanting to go to or, if you're tight on cash, plan a day out. It can be as simple as going out to a club, visiting a museum, or going to a restaurant to eat. Plan the day out so you know what fits into your budget and add or remove things as needed.

2. Virtual Tours

Use Google Arts & Culture to go through a virtual tour of museums and tourist spots around the world. Many of us love to travel and this is your chance to travel from home. It might even inspire you to get out of the house and go to these places in person when you are finally able to.

3. Clean Up Your Space

Before I had so much time to sit at home, I was always busy. Too busy to do regular cleaning at home like I should have. If you have a similar situation, this is your time. No more excuses to not get those dirty dishes done, floor swept, or closets organized. A chaotic space can lead to anxiety. No one wants to do work when they're worried about the chores that still haven't gotten done. Go through your closets. Who knows what forgotten treasures can be found in there! Your work space is also important and this is the perfect time to go through all of your files, throw away old, useless papers, and organize the ones you are keeping.

Cleaning up your space doesn't just mean your physical space, it can mean your digital space. Go through the photos on your phone and finally delete some of them so your icloud storage doesn't keep sending you notifications. Go through all the grocery lists you have on your phone's Notes app that you haven't deleted. Clean out your computer files that you don't use that can be slowing you down. There's so much you can do!

4. Take a Nap

Do you ever get sleep or tired halfway through your day? If so, taking a nap isn't a bad idea. An afternoon nap can help you re-energize and be more ready to do tasks later.

5. Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle!

Puzzles are a great way to relax and have fun alone or with someone else. They come with a variety of themes such as nature, video games, superheroes and much more to purchase. They can take a few days depending on how many pieces you get so they are time consuming which is perfect if you are stuck inside for weeks like I am.

The more the merrier is what I say when it comes to selecting how many pieces I want my puzzles to have! I am a longtime puzzler and enjoy doing 2000+ piece puzzles but if you're newer, you might want to start with something that has less. For beginners, I would recommend 100-300 piece puzzles and upgrade to bigger ones if you feel like you need a challenge. Check out some of the ones I recommend:

6. Play Video Games

Society today makes us feel that if we aren't doing something productive, it isn't worth doing and that's completely wrong! Video games take you to a different world and let you be who you want. You can be the hero to save the whole city, the really cool crime fighting detective, or the cute little creature building your own town.

7. Binge TV Shows and Movies

Now is the time for you to catch up on shows that you've been wanting to catch up on for weeks! With so many options like Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and Crunchyroll, you can be occupied for days. House, You, and Criminal Minds are my personal favorites!

8. Create and Stick With Good Habits

I always say that I just don't have time to do certain things. Sitting at home all day has made me realized that I was making excuses. All the things that I wasn't doing before because of "time constraints" are things that I still wasn't doing a week after I was unable to go outside. Things like, regular house cleaning, working on projects, and being healthy.

I made it a point to get rid of any excuses I was making and just do the things that I needed to do. I created a schedule for myself that I now follow on things that I should be making it a habit to do. Starting my day off with thirty minutes of yoga and thirty minutes of exercise has really changed my energy levels. Figure out what you've been avoiding and start doing them.

9. Read or Listen to a Book

Reading is another great way to pass the time doing something that is enjoyable and also benefits you. Books are amazing because they can take you into a whole new world with dragons, wizards, and anything else you can imagine. The benefit is that you can pick whichever genre you like or if you're more spontaneous, just pick one at random and start reading.

Listening to a book is a good option for those of you who have things to do around the house. I personally love Audible, Amazon's audio book and spoken word entertainment site, and the wide selection of things to listen to. They even have Audible Latino for those of you who are more comfortable with Spanish. If you don't want to pay the big bucks to subscribe, Audible is offering a month free subscription with one free book included. Another option is Kindle which is good if you like to read but don't want a lot of books cluttering up your space.

10. Learn New Cooking Recipes

Cooking is a great way to pass time between preparing the food to cleaning dishes after. We've all seen those short Facebook videos on how to make snacks and meals that just make your mouth water. Those are perfect to experiment with or you can find hundreds of recipes with a quick Google search.

11. Video Chat With Friends

Video chatting with friends can help all of you extroverts out there who are used to seeing friends all the time. With circumstances preventing you from being able to physically see anyone, this can get you to connect with others in a similar situation and share heart to heart talks or just to have company from people you enjoy having in life.

12. Go Down the YouTube Rabbit Hole

If TV shows and movies aren't really your thing, you might want to try YouTube. Thousands of videos are uploaded daily and sometimes the content is almost better than what you find on television. I have fallen into the YouTube rabbit hole plenty of times already from watching large and small creators. Some of my favorites are:

  • Devinsupertramp - adventure and extreme sports videos

  • Philip Defranco - current events channel

  • Primink - creates videos about scammers, Youtube drama, and current events

  • Julian Greystoke - a book reviewer and writer

  • Mr. Nightmare - creates scary story and dark themed list videos
